Ruukki’s Offering for the Mining Industry
Raex wear resistant steel for demanding use by the mining industry
Raex wear-resistant steel by Ruukki has been designed to withstand even the most demanding conditions, so it is a safe and cost-effective choice for the needs of the mining industry. Despite its high strength and hardness, Raex boasts good weldability and forming properties.
The use of Raex can significantly reduce the wear and breaking of mining equipment components and the ensuing expenses.
The mining industry involves a great deal of material extracting, crushing and transport. Raex wear-resistant steel is ideal for lining equipment parts which are susceptible to wear and tear, such as the interior of crushers or feed hoppers, impact surfaces, transport equipment and conveyor belts.
Raex 400 steel is an excellent material for long-term heavy-duty use and parts which are susceptible to strong surface pressure, such as loading pallets that have to withstand the impact of rocks. The hardness of Raex 400 is 2.5 times that of ordinary structural steel. Raex 500 is particularly suited for use in abrasive environments with extremely high surface pressure, such as excavator buckets used by the mining industry. The hardness of Raex 500 is three times that of ordinary structural steel.
Durability Brings Efficiency
Mining establishments are often located in remote areas where equipment maintenance is demanding and difficult. When mining equipment breaks down, operations may be interrupted for extended periods of time. The exceptionally strong Raex steels are a safe and durable production material that can significantly reduce the shutdowns and expenses caused by component wear and breakage.
Light-weight, durable products, for the most demanding conditions, can be achieved by combining wear-resistant Raex steels and ultra-high-strength Optim structural steels in one product.
“In addition, the qualitative characteristics of Raex 400 meet all production requirements of manufacturers. Raex makes it possible to significantly reduce costs related to the damage of structural parts. In addition to its good strength and hardness, Raex steel has also good formability and weldability,” said Andrey Klyucharov, Project Manager of Automarket Mining
The more wear-resistant Raex can be used for components which are most susceptible to wear. The ultra-high-strength Optim steel, on the other hand, is ideally suited for use as a structural steel in frameworks or lifting booms.
By combining these two grades of steel, it is, for instance, possible to build transport equipment with an unusually high payload. High-strength steels enable increasingly light-weight structures and a better payload without compromising durability.
Good Workability
Despite their high strength, Raex steels can be formed using conventional machining techniques. Raex boasts excellent flangeability. The spring-back effect can also even be more easily controlled than with some softer structural steel grades.
Ruukki’s steel service centers also offer ready-bent, laser welded components, even processed into ready-made parts or products. The ready-made components, possessing excellent dimensional accuracy, have brought our customers considerable cost savings and more efficient production. Ruukki also has the full capacity to deliver spare parts around the world.
Special Steel Components from Ruukki’s Production Network
Ruukki also specializes in combining its expertise in special steels with the production of demanding special-steel-based components. Special steel components are manufactured from high-strength or wear-resistant steels, and include frame structures, booms, supports and buckets used in load handling and lifting equipment, mining and mobile machines, and forestry equipment.
“When we are able to design components together with the customer as early as possible, we can combine our expertise in materials and manufacturing in the best possible way. The aim is to identify new uses for special steel components and provide customers with added value for their products. When the life of components which are susceptible to wear in mine vehicles is prolonged, less time is spent on maintenance. This translates into direct savings for the user,” said Pentti Hallila, Sales Manager from Ruukki.
When required, Ruukki can deliver ready-to-install components manufactured by its international network in Finland and the emerging markets in Central Eastern Europe and China.
Global Supply
Ruukki is an internationally operating company, which globally offers special steel and processed special steel components. Ruukki is able to provide manufacturers worldwide with products of uniform quality. Products are available in Ruukki’s steel service centers, located around Europe and partners’ stocks globally.
It is possible to order preprocessed material from Ruukki: prefabrication services exist from surface treatment to shape/profile cutting. “The availability of a multi-branch network of service facilities is one of Ruukki’s main advantages. This has allowed Granit LLC to avoid any delays in the manufacture of high-quality products, as well as to meet all delivery schedules,” said Mr. Artem Solovjev, General Director of Granit LLC.
Around the world, a diversified service network has been built and is continuously expanded upon with local partners. Thanks to the accurate deliveries of its logistics, Ruukki has helped a large number of globally operating mining industry manufacturers improve the efficiency of their production and operation.
“It is not sufficient that the product is good. It also has to be available everywhere. The delivery chain has to be unbroken. We can additionally provide technical support in the local language,” said Juhani Asunmaa, Product Portfolio Director from Ruukki.
