Local Group in Menomonie Wis. Honored for Inventing Safety Suit for Miners
A group in Menomonie is honored for its clothing design aimed at keeping miners safe on the job. The group won an international contest and was recognized last week in Baltimore.
The suit they designed is made specifically for miners. The material is both reflective and glows in the dark to make it easier to spot them. It also includes padding and built-in tourniquets. The group’s leader, a UW-Stout student, says she hopes the invention will soon be used in the field.
“We had a lot of industry leaders come up to us during the Expo and they told us that this really is a marketable item,” says Toni Sabelman, a senior at UW-Stout. “So we as a group are trying to figure out a way that we can put it on the market and test it to see if it could be used one day.”
The group says its next step is to get a patent for their jacket.
